Before you go
- Documents: vehicle registration book, registration certificate or licensing certificate.
- ID for whoever brings the car: driving licence or Public Services Card. Without it the test can go ahead, but the certificate is held back until ID is shown.
- Boot empty, no personal items in the car, and the glove compartment unlocked and clear (it gives access for the OBD check). A child seat left in the car will have its fitting checked.
- Hubcaps off if they hide the wheel nuts, tyres at the right pressure, and all seat belts and buckles visible, rear ones included.
- Arrive with the engine at normal operating temperature.
- The car reasonably clean and any load secured: a vehicle too dirty or unsafe to inspect can be refused.
- Arrive 10 minutes early. Late arrivals may have to rebook and pay a cancellation fee.
The most common fail categories in 2025 were steering and suspension (18.5%), lighting and electrical (17.6%), side slip (wheel alignment) test (15.2%), wheels and tyres (12.8%). Most can be checked at home or quickly at a garage: see the checklist, or check how your model and year usually do.
How long it takes
Citizens Information puts the test at around 40 minutes to an hour. Under the NCTS customer charter the target is to start within 15 minutes of your appointment time, and if you wait more than 65 minutes for the test to start, the test is free. Recording devices are not permitted in NCT centres.
Paying
Online bookings are paid in full when you book (Visa or Mastercard). At the centre the NCTS takes cash, debit cards and major credit cards, but not American Express. Cancelling, changing or not showing up with less than five working days' notice costs €24 (€16 for a retest), kept from what you paid.
During the test
The items tested are set by EU Directive 2009/40/EC and described in the NCT manual: lights and electrics, steering and suspension, brakes (including a brake performance test), wheels and tyres, wheel alignment, shock absorbers, headlight aim, emissions, body and safety equipment such as seat belts. Each category is explained in NCT fail reasons.
The result
| Result | What it means | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Pass | No faults found. | You get the NCT report, certificate and the windscreen disc. |
| Pass pending recheck (minor) | Only minor defects. | Repair them and bring the car back for a visual recheck, which is free and needs no booking, before the certificate is issued. |
| Major (fail) | The car failed the NCT. | Repair, then book the retest within 21 days and complete it within 30. |
| Dangerous | A dangerous defect; a "fail dangerous" sticker goes on the car. | Do not drive it under any circumstances: arrange towing, repair it and pass a re-inspection before a certificate is issued. |
If the car fails
Most cars that fail pass at the retest: in 2025, 90.3% of retests were passes. A retest that needs test equipment costs €40; a visual-only retest is free. Full rules in NCT retest.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I am late for my NCT?
The NCTS asks you to arrive 10 minutes early. If you are late you may have to rebook for another day and pay a cancellation fee.
What does "pass pending recheck" mean?
Only minor defects were found. Fix them and bring the car back for a free visual recheck (no booking needed); the certificate is issued after that.
How long does the NCT take?
Around 40 minutes to an hour, according to Citizens Information. If the test starts more than 65 minutes after your appointment time, the NCTS customer charter says it is free.
How long do I have to fix a fail?
Book the retest within 21 days of the first test and complete it within 30 days, otherwise you have to pay for and do a full test again.
What is a dangerous result?
A defect serious enough that the car must not be driven at all. It gets a fail dangerous sticker, has to be towed away, repaired and pass a re-inspection before any certificate is issued.
Can they refuse to test my car?
Yes. If the boot is not empty, the glove box is locked or full, or the car is not reasonably clean, the NCTS may be unable to test it.
